|
|
|
According to historian Scrotumus Maximus regarding the Battle of Iuvavum
(translated from Latin):
General Servius Gessius marched towards Iuvavum only
to be confronted by a small band of Dacians up on a hill. Noticing his
disadvantage for his infantry and cavalry still climbing towards the top and
on snow covered terrain, he ordered his cavalry and infantry to push up
quickly. Knowing the Dacians had a larger force equal to his own, the small
force of Dacians on the hill he regarded as a decoy. He ordered to flank both
sides of the Dacians and quickly eliminated them with full force of his
cavalry. Just when Servius was barely recovering from the short battle,
the main force of Dacians led by Ata appeared in the slope opposite his own
with a small wooded area on the right. This time both armies stood in front of
each other. Servius, having been misinformed, charged his cavalry on his left
flank to the approaching Dacian infantrymen. The cavalry charged right
into spears and many of them did not escape as they were surrounded by Dacians.
On the right flanks, the Dacian cavalry overpowered Servius' right flank
cavalry still recovering from the previous engagement minutes before. Now the
moment of decisive decision, he ordered his own guards and himself and charged
at the Dacian cavalry. Surprised, the Dacians horsemen retreated through the
small patch of woods on top of the hill. Now Servius placed his attention
towards the infantry. By this times were feet away from each other. The Romans
soldiers threw their pila in unison and hundreds of them took flight and tore
through the Dacian ranks. The Romans charge and both forces clashed with
intensity. Servius then charged his cavalry right through the Dacians line
collapsing the Dacian formations and even his own. The weight of the horses
helped moved back the Dacians until they collapse and started retreating. The
Romans then gave chase and all but a few Dacians survived the onslaught.

Dacians on a hill but quickly had to reform to face a larger force of Dacians
